How to Make DIY Soil Compost Sifter Sieve

Hi, friends in this post I will show you how I created a simple Soil / Compost Sifter Sieve. I will show you two designs for creating this sifter. The first one uses stainless steel mesh so you can create a sifter with varying mesh sizes. The other design uses a thermocol box which is for separating larger particles like twigs and other undecomposed particles from compost.

Usecase Stainless Steel Mesh Sifter

I use this sifter to filter my compost to get a very fine compost which I use for growing seedlings

I also use it to filter my garden soil to remove any large particles and stones which I then use to create potting soil.

Making Stainless Steel Mesh Sifter

Making this sifter is easy you will need some paper clips, a rectangular piece of stainless steel mesh, and a square piece of stainless steel mesh.

  1. Role the rectangular piece of stainless steel mesh into the shape of a cylinder.
  2. Straigten a paper clip and use it to join the two ends of the rolled rectangular stainless steel mesh.
  3. Simply insert the paper clip wire into the both the mesh and fold the end point to create a big staple.
  4. Place the square piece of mesh at the bottom of the cylinder and fold the four ends of the square.
  5. Then again use some straigned paper clips to join the square mesh to the bottom of the cylinder.

Usecase Thermocol Sifter

This I use to sift the dried leaves to remove twigs and other large pieces of material.

I also use it to sift compost to remove any undecomposed large pieces and also it helps in breaking any lumps in the compost.

Making Thermocol Sifter

You will need a thermocol box and a hollow metal rod the thickness of this rod will determine the filter size of the sifter.

  1. Press the hollow metal rod at the bottom of the thermocol box.
  2. Then while pushing the rod gentle twist the rod to cut into the thermocol base of the box.
  3. This will create a hole repeat the same process across the base of the box evenly to create a mesh for filtering.

Filtering Twigs from Leaves

Using this sifter you can easily separate small leaves from twigs which otherwise takes a lot of effort to do it manually. You can then add these filtered dried leaves to your compost pile to create a nice leaf mold compost.

  1. First add the mixture of dried leaves and twigs in the thermocol sifter
  2. Next move the sifter side by side this will cause the leaves to fall through the holes
  3. After some time you should be left with only the twigs and any other large particles in the sifter
  4. At the bottom you will get the filtered dried levaes without any large twigs or particles
